I have gone a lot of paths of scaling software from early stage startups to trillion dollar companies with billion dollar product launches all with a smaller than a pizza team.
We tore down a lot of legacy code with a hammer and sometimes put them back together from falling apart with duct tape, crazy glue, and a few nails. There were days of driving a 23-hour "Teams" meeting to launch a critical product when the entire world was on your shoulders. Answered occasional late night and early morning production outage alerts, a few false positive early warning calls, and put fires out with a bucket of water, gardening hose, or just a blanket, whatever was available at the time.
Software has a long shelf life and legacy software is still the backbone of enterprise. Boring software is a reliable software as one of our engineering directors used to say. Of course, until it is no longer reliable and cost of maintaining becomes more painful than rebuilding new. Building a reliable and scalable software business is hard. It requires multiple disciplines, and great amount of team work.

Where are we heading?
Efficiencies of software will be more accessible. No code and low code tools and services will allow the technology to spread faster and bring the creation front and center to the creators.
We are walking towards space tech. Alien technology for the masses and telepathy.

The next few years will be the golden age of information transformation and access to human knowledge in a more natural human-to-human interaction format with computers.
The old metaphor of the desktop is fading away. Thanks to Large Language Models (LLMs) trained on scraped data from the entire web, and communicate back in a generative format that feel natural communication.
Human-computer interaction will feel more human-like. Instead of us learning to interact with the computer, the computer will know how to interact with humans like a human would.
That's the shift, plain and simple. All the meta verses and augmented reality gadgets and chatbots are just a proxy for today.
Imagine now searching the web, going through a couple of pages, and scanning a page to understand what's going on reading the content. The result of the interaction won't feel like someone tried to spam the search engine with a set of repetitive keywords on a page with bold text to game the rankings.
The LLMs know how to understand the human conversation, process an approximate best nearest neighbor lookup in the vast data, and sum up and average out the information in a pseudo-predictive way. Thats an available technology today that could be leveraged in your business. The decision making could be assembled together with some custom logic, information retrieval from some internal source or companies public data or available common knowledge on the web via some agents, and a new interaction. Analyzing data is much easier with pre defined models that are ready to do some common objectives, and plug and play and some integration of multiple of these systems are all left to the end business user.

So much data, so little time
Software exists with data. Moving data through distribution pipelines, transforming data and loading them to different systems, normalize the data between multiple production versions, enriching and pulling insights are the areas I have previously worked on, sometimes hand in hand with data and reporting teams, and it is not a fun part of operation. Processing takes a lot of time and patience, and sometimes the data needs to be operationally corrected and fixed while the auditing is intact.
However, uncovering the insights that surprise you are always fun and most valuable.
How is AI going to help my business
If your business was a person and someone would interact with it as a person, how would you want your business to interact with your prospective clients and customers as a person?
We are still in the early stages of these tools coming together from different angles, prompting, RAGs, pre-training, and fine-tuning.
Better prompts allow more specific instructions to limit the interaction of the computer to more narrow tasks and skills. I wont be able to help you crawl the entire web and build your own model, but for a more specific and narrow area, it is not overwhelming and could chat. Open source has come a long way and classification models cluster content to better groups. I could help you with specialty models pre-trained with better-labeled data, reinforced with human feedback in the loop for your specific need.
Agents provide the tooling needed to interact with inaccessible data or retrieval augmented generation techniques for interacting with data from business or customers' internal data.
